Sylvester McCoy: No 20th Century Doctors Will Feature In The 50th Anniversary Special

Following his comments to Den Of Geek that he had not been asked to appear in the Doctor Who Anniversary special, Sylvester McCoy has now claimed that none of the pre-revival Doctors have been asked back to appear in the show.

The Seventh Doctor actor said: "The 20th century Doctors haven't heard anything. I don't know about the 21st century Doctors, but we from our century have not been asked to do it. We old Who-ers have not been asked to go along. All of us want to do it, just for the fans - because that's what they want. But we've heard nothing - Tom Baker's heard nothing, Colin Baker, Peter Davison, Paul McGann… none of us have heard anything."

However he did reveal that he plans to be part of the Doctor Who 50th Celebration Weekend convention, to be held at ExCeL in London over the anniversary weekend in late November.

"I believe the BBC are doing a very big London convention coming up," he said. "All being well, I'll be there."

Filming began on the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special this week in South Wales. Matt Smith, Jenna-Louise Coleman, David Tennant, Billie Piper, Joanna Page and John Hurt have all been confirmed among the cast.

  2. If this is true then that is absolutely tragic, they might as well call it an 8 year anniversary. Without the 20th Century Doctors we wouldn't be where we are today so I for one think that Steven Moffat and co are seriously going along the wrong lines by not even asking any of them to return. Sylvester is right, we all want them back in some shape or form. If they are not there in physical form then they must be remembered in some sort of flashback or something because if none of the 20th Century Doctor's are there I for one will be very disappointed, as would a hell of a lot of older and younger fans. Then again, David said he knew nothing about returning and pretty much said he wasn't going to be in it, and he we are.

  3. With the possible exception of Paul McGann, all of the 20th century Doctors would look far to old to appear in this as a previous Doctor.

  4. I thought Eccleston was confirmed too?

    1. Nope he said he would not be doing it. All we have confirmed is 10 and rose and the chick that plays the daughter of the late great Brigadier-general (who was only in one episode "The power of 3") So far it sounds like Moffat is going to screw up the 50th anniversary. ( does not want to do it, and 8-4 have not been asked? Seems wonderful.

  5. This sucks. Is it too late for the fans to get involved and change this?

    1. there are already photos circulating of Tennant and Smith with scripts. either steven is being steven and trying to keep characters a secret, or our 50th anniversary is just bringing Tennant and Piper back.

  6. Tragic. The older Doctors could very well appear if a proper story device were devised to explain their having aged. And why oh why waste such a grand opportunity to have all surviving Doctors join forces to save Gallifrey. That would be a fitting 50th anniversary celebration.

  7. Keep in mind that until it was confirmed that Tennant and Piper were going to be in the special, both said that they heard nothing.

  8. they all deserve a part, they are all a part of the shows history, I grew up with Tom Baker, Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy. If they decide to ignore the past 50 years of history I for one wil be boycotting the annerversary, any one with an ounce of respect for the first generation of doctors should do the same. who does Moffat think he is, or is he that arrogant that he believes it is all his idea.

    1. Yes, Moffat is indeed that arrogant. I'm now expecting everyone to job to River Song and Clara, the Zygons will just be misunderstood and humanity will be the real villain in the end. :p

    2. I think all Whovians are definitely being short-changed by Moffat. I was seriously hoping Tom Baker and Peter Davison would at least show up in some way. I grew up with the 4th and 5th Docs, and wish there were some way to make Moffat see reason.

It's like J.J. Abrams rebooting everything he gets the rights to. He doesn't care about the fans, he's only in it for the money.

  9. I thought the children in need special with Peter Davidson and David Tennant was great. I see no problem with bringing them all back like they did in 5 doctors.

  10. I thought it fairly awful Tom Baker was left out of the BBC's tribute to Elisabeth Sladen as well. There's a history of that sort of thing.

  11. I can see why they're not coming back for the tv show: Tom is 80, Colin and Sylvester are 70, Peter (the baby of the group) is nearly 60. All of them have simply changed too much from their DW days to appear on television as the Doctor without looking grossly wrong. Where I DO think Moffat messed up is not taking advantage of the 50th Anniversary to do some kind of animated miniseries that would allow them to appear as voice actors. That way, they could get Sean Pertwee and David Troughton to voice their fathers' Doctors and get the guy who played Bill Hartnell in the upcoming tv-movie to play the 1st Doctor. Instead, we get a movie and a Christmas special.
