Fox To Produce A US Adaptation Of Broadchurch

Fox will adapt the hit UK series Broadchurch for the US market, it has been announced today.

The original series starring David Tennant, Olivia Colman and Arthur Darvill was an emotional journey through an investigation into the murder of a schoolboy in a small seaside town. The series finale was watched by over 10 million viewers, eager to uncover the mystery behind the gripping whodunnit.

Original series creator Chris Chibnall will write the first episode and will also executive produce the adaptation along with Carolyn Bernstein of Shine America and Jane Featherstone of Kudos. The distributor will be Shine International..It is hoped that production will begin in January for broadcast in the 2014-15 season. The adaptation was adapted ahead of last weeks presentation by BBC America at the Television Critics Association Press Tour. There is no word on casting or any other details about how closely the adaptation will adhere to the original UK version, or even if it will keep the title Broadchurch.

Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly said, "Broadchurch is the kind of storytelling that grabs your attention and keeps you riveted with every minute -- which is exactly what we look for in an event series. We love the layered characters, we've seen how well-received it's been in the U.K., and we're lucky to be able to bring a new version of this mystery to the U.S. audience."

Meanwhile, the original version, which kept UK audiences riveted over eight episodes when it screened on ITV earlier this year, will have its US premiere on Wednesday 7th August at 10pm/9c on BBC America

The series will also premiere on Showcase in Canada on Sunday 4th August at 10pm ET, continuing on Monday 5th at the same time

Chris Chibnall is also currently at work on a second series of Broadchurch  for the UK which is expected to go into production around May 2013. Cast details have yet to be announced.
