Hannibal Showrunner On A David Tennant Appearance: "One Way Or Another It's Going To Happen"

Following the explosive season 2 finale to NBC's gruesome drama Hannibal and the recommissioning of the series for a third season, showrunner Bryan Fuller has given his clearest indication yet that he still wants David Tennant to appear in the show.

David auditioned for the role of Hannibal Lecter but was narrowly beaten to the part by Mads Mikkelsen. Fuller has repeatedly spoken of his admiration for David since then, and also of his desire to include him in a guest role as a deranged serial killer in the series which explores the early relationship between Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham, characters created by Thomas Harris and made famous via film adaptations such as Silence Of The Lambs and Manhunter. Hannibal, the series, also stars Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne and Gillian Anderson and has guest starred Eddie Izzard and Amanda Plummer. David Bowie was also rumoured to be appearing but his schedule would not allow it.

Of David, Bryan Fuller says,
“We had talked about David being a guest star in season two, and once again it's a schedule issue. He was filming the American Broadchurch for our dates in season two, and he's also a very busy man, so it's about finding that window. I love David Tennant, I think he's a wonderful talent and I've been dying to work with him for many years now, so one way or another it's going to happen."

He was also asked whether he'd had a specific role in mind for David in season 2.

"No, with him it's basically, 'Do you want to do the show? Okay, in that case let's write something fantastic for you specifically'," he explained.

Little is known about the third season, which starts shooting in October, though there has been some talk of some episodes shooting in Europe. It is thought that the series may now be moving into Red Dragon territory with the introduction of serial killer Francis Dolarhyde, one of the characters from the Hannibal universe that NBC already hold the rights to.

David Tennant is currently working on the second series of the award winning ITV drama Broadchurch and will wrap in September.

Season 2 of Hannibal is currently airing in the UK on Sky Living at 10pm on Tuesdays.
