After nearly three weeks and 9 million votes, David Tennant
has emerged as the winner of the Radio Times TV Champion Contest 2014. Determined
voting by his dedicated fans ensured he saw off a tense last challenge from
Benedict Cumberbatch, winning the final round by 200,000 votes.
David saw off competition from 127 other celebrities over
the duration of the poll which launched on Friday 18th July. Other
names in the contest, selected by Radio Times staff, included fellow Doctor Who stars Matt Smith, Billie
Piper and Peter Capaldi, Sherlock’s
Martin Freeman, comic Ricky Gervais and presenters Ant and Dec. David faced some
potentially tough challenges, including rounds against Karen Gillan and Cillian
Murphy and a semi-final head-to-head with Tom Hiddleston.
The final round, which began on Friday afternoon, saw David
lock horns with Benedict Cumberbatch. Benedict’s journey had seen him facing Doctor Who and Broadchurch star Arthur Darvill, his Sherlock brother Mark Gatiss, and Dame Maggie Smith herself before
his semi-final clash with Ricky Gervais, who had used his personal Twitter and
Facebook accounts to motivate his own followers.
The five day long final vote saw 2.85 million votes cast. Earlier
today, Radio Times chose to hide the voting figures, and it was only after the
poll closed that David emerged the clear winner: 1.53m votes compared to Benedict’s 1.33m.
Tom Glanfield, editor the Radio Times site said: “It was a
hard fought final as fans from across the globe got involved, and while there
could be only one winner, Radio Times TV Champion has shown just how well-loved
British TV and its stars are around the world. Congratulations to David Tennant
and everyone who voted for him! See you in 2015 to see if he can defend his
title!”
