What We Did On Our Holiday - Premiere Night

The world premiere of the new BBC Films comedy feature took place at the Odeon West End Leicester Square last night. The event was attended by many of the film's cast, including David Tennant, Rosamund Pike, Billy Connolly, Ben Miller, Amelia Bullmore, Lewis Davie and the three youngest cast members Emilia Jones, Bobby Smalldridge and Harriet Turnbull. Other guests walking the red carpet with them included Hugh Dennis, Daniel Roche, Ramona Marquez, Pamela Stephenson, Aled Jones, Clive Anderson, Tracy Ann Oberman, Vanessa Feltz and Waterloo Road's Georgie Glen, who told us later on at the post-screening reception that her part in the film had unfortunately been cut.

David and Ben were notably dressed in kilts, while Billy sported a brown suit. Rosamund and Amelia were both in black, heavily pregnant Rosamund in a lacy number, Amelia in a longer more formal gown. Bobby looked quite the young man in a dashing blue suit while his onscreen sisters looked stunning in their dresses: Harriet in tartan and Emilia in a striking red outfit. The stars were interviewed, signed autographs and posed for photos with fans and for the legion of press photographers before entering the cinema.

One half of the creative duo behind the film, Guy Jenkin, took to the stage to introduce the film.

He made a small plea to the audience. "There is," he said, "What we shall call an extraordinary event that happens at some point in this film. I think you'll recognise it when you see it. Can we please ask you, please do say how much you like the film, as long as you do like it, but not to give that away to people. I'm not saying anything bad will happen to you...but that's why Andy isn't here tonight!"

In fact, his co-writer and director Andy was across town promoting the film on The One Show having briefly appeared on the red carpet first, and he would return to join his colleagues during the screening. Guy thanked a number of people, including the crew, "...many of whom are undergoing midge survival counselling..." he joked, referring to the swarms of insects which plagued the shoot. He also thanked the producers, Dan Winch and David M. Thompson, who, he said, had achieved a miracle in getting a small British film to that point.

Finally he introduced the the cast. "I don't have to say too much about them because you'll just see how brilliant they are when you watch the film, but they were immense fun to work with and they were just terrific actors all of them."

As the cast mounted the stage, Billy Connolly paused to pick something up from the floor, which turned out to be David's skean dhu (ceremonial dagger) which had fallen out of his sock as he walked.

The film screened to unanimous applause.

Afterwards, cast and creatives and invited guests attended a post screening party complete with holiday-themed rum based cocktails.

What We Did On Our Holiday follows a family in marital crisis on a holiday to Scotland to celebrate a family birthday. They hope to just get through the week without the kids spilling the beans about the impending divorce - they certainly didn't count on a staggering event that brings them under international media scrutiny!

The film opens in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on Friday 26th September.
