David Tennant Hosts Samsung's New Shakespeare Study App

David Tennant is the host of a brand new cutting edge Shakespeare-themed app rolling out onto Android devices from today. The app is the result of a joint venture between Samsung UK and the Royal Shakespeare Company and aims to inspire 11-18 year olds to study Shakespeare and unlock the works of the Bard for a new generation.

The RE: Shakespeare programme is where amazing talent meets amazing technology and the world’s favourite playwright meets some of the biggest names in popular culture.

RE:Shakespeare also stars actress Tamsin Greig, rapper and poet Akala, beatboxing artist Shlomo and director Iqbal Khan.  The app features:

  • Akala’s Hip-hop vs. Shakespeare Quiz
  • A virtual reality version of Much Ado About Nothing, where users can watch a scene from the play in amazing 360-degree action
  • The chance to create a Dubsmash track and music video by mixing Shakespeare with human beatboxing artist Shlomo
  • Short lecture clips on Shakespearean drama
  • Tools to help understand the language of Shakespeare
  • Lip-syncing with poet Indigo Williams’ Shakespearean love lines and put-downs
  • Director Iqbal Khan's performance workshop
  • Acting experience opposite real RSC actors on the Royal Shakespeare Theatre 360-degree virtual stage.

Catherine Mallyon, executive director of the RSC explains, "Even 400 years on Shakespeare remains Britain’s preeminent playwright. As the only named writer that all children must study between the ages of 11 and 18, our mission to inspire students and teachers is more important than ever. The RE:Shakespeare app helps people to relate to Shakespeare and his themes in a whole new way. Once people start drawing comparisons between the plays and their own experiences, they will find Shakespeare even more accessible."

Russell Taylor, CMO at Samsung Electronics UK and Ireland adds: "This campaign merges education and entertainment to create an immersive, engaging and fun way for young people to learn. It showcases how Samsung’s technology is brought to life in a relevant and accessible way."

RE:Shakespeare is developed by Samsung UK and The RSC in partnership with ad agency Cheil and production company Unit9 and is part of Samsung’s Pride Rediscovery programme which aims to preserve the world’s cultural heritage by championing outstanding literary works from around the world through digital technology.

The app is available through Google Play and Samsung Galaxy Apps, and requires Jelly Bean 4.3 APIs 14 or a newer version of Android. At the moment it is available to a limited range of Android devices only but Samsung plan to roll out the app to young people during July.
